AOHS Students Tackle Adventure Course

AOHS Students Suit Up!
 
Students in Body Structures and Functions learned the importance of infection control and how to don personal protective equipment (PPE).


Classes Adopt Bourbon Heights Residents
 
On April 9, Mrs. Majewski's 1st year AOHS students along with Mrs. Jarvis' Foods class students participated in an Adopt A Resident at Bourbon Heights.  AOHS students delivered toiletries, word game booklets, throw blankets, and socks, while the Foods class students delivered sugar free muffins.

Academy Welcomes Guest Speaker
 
Kurt Thompson, Physical Therapist from Bourbon Community Hospital spoke with the AOHS first year students on December 10.  He encouraged students to chose a career that they were passionate about and to observe in that career field prior going to college.

AOHS Class Participates in Class Lab
  Garrett West labeled the facial muscles on his lab partner, Michael Frye during Body Structures and Functions class.
 

AOHS Hosts Former Student
 
Macy Allen returned to the AOHS two years after graduating from PHS.  She will begin nursing school in January 2015 at UK.  She encouraged students to pay attention in AOHS classes and stressed the importance of learning how to study while in high school.
          

Guest Speaker Visits AOHS
 
Anchalee D. Steele, Medical Laboratory Technician/Phlebotomy Program Director from Spencerian College (Paris HS graduate) visited the AOHS Principles of Health Science class on November 18.  She and two of her current students assisted students to make slides.  Once slides were made, students viewed the cells under a microscope.

Students Earn CPR Certification
 
Fourteen AOHS students earned CPR certification yesterday, Nov 13, 20014. The certification class was conducted by Steve Asbury, EMT and will stay current for two years. Click here to view the complete photo gallery.

AOHS Hosts Guest Speaker and PHS Alum
 
Lisa Livingood, Speech Language Pathologist, PHS graduate and Jara Bauer, Dietitian visited the Principles of Health Science class on Nov 12.  They encouraged students to sample a variety of food textures some patients require after a stroke or traumatic brain injury.

AOHS Department Visits UK
  The AOHS 1st and 2nd year students attended the AHEC Health Careers showcase at UK on Tuesday, November 11. Thirty-two students explored 14 various health professional displays.  Students were able to mix a compound and make a capsule at the Pharmacy display, look at blood cells under a microscope at the Medical Lab booth, and don proper surgical attire required for Surgical technology.  Click here to view the complete photo gallery.

AOHS Welcomes Guest Speaker
 
Kyla Hadley, RN Med Surg nurse from Harrison Memorial Hospital discussed various nursing careers and opportunities on October 31, 2014.   

Guest Speaker Visits AOHS
 
Sherry Eubanks Director of Radiology from Bourbon Community Hospital visited the AOHS Principles of Health Science on October 23.  She discussed the changes in Radiography over the years and encouraged students to find a career they enjoy.

AOHS Hosts Dietician
 
Jara Bauer, Dietary Manager from Harrison Memorial Hospital visited the Principles of Health Science class on October 30.                                

AOHS Welcomes Guest Speaker
 
Casey Shaddix, from the UK College of Health Sciences visited the AOHS first year students on October 27.  He provided the students with information about programs like Physical Therapy, Medical Laboratory and Clinical Nutrition available at UK.

AOHS Students Participate in Disaster Training

On October 16, the AOHS 3rd year students played "victims" during a disaster training for Bourbon Community Hospital. Partcipants included Michael Frye, Kennedy Brown, Stephanie Baker, Julietta DeBord, Hunter Harrison, Kayla Gray, Heather Ramsay, Garrett West, Dylan Hunt, Matthew Puryear, and Tiarra Myers . AOHS Students Practice Suturing
 

Second year AOHS students enrolled in Emergency Procedures class have been learning about various types of wounds, signs of infection, and the treatments available.  One treatment for deep wounds is sutures.  Student participated in a hands on activity involving two types of stitches and how to "tie off" a stitch.  Click here to view the complete photo gallery. 

 

AOHS Welcomes Drew Beckett 
 
Drew Beckett, MPH, Public Health Administrator from the Bourbon Co Health Department visited Mrs. Amy Majewski's Principles of Health Science class.  He reviewed the three primary functions of the health department: Promote, Prevent, and Protect.  He also encouraged students to participate in the county's Get Fit program and stressed the importance of taking care of one's health.         


AOHS Hosts Guest Speaker
 
On October 2, Kim Jernigan, Registered Respiratory Therapist from Bourbon Community Hospital spoke to the Paris AOHS Principles of Health Science class.  She allowed students to individually use a pulse ox machine to determine one's heart rate and oxygen concentration. She stressed the importance of not smoking and explained many respiratory diseases like COPD which are a direct result of smoking. 


Local Pharmacist Speaks to AOHS Students

 
Latrice Strings, Rite Aid Pharmacist, spoke with the Principles of Health Science class on Monday, Sept 29 about her career.  She discussed why she chose a health career and gave some recommendations for students in high school. 

AOHS Hosts Guest Speakers
 
Dr Amanda Thornberry, DMD and Elizabeth Herrington, EDDA (2010 PHS Alumna) visited the Principles of Health Science class on Wednesday, Sept 24. Students learned about the educational requirements for becoming a dentist and dental assistant. Each student received a toothbrush as a reminder of the importance of dental hygiene.

Mrs. Majewski's Principles of Health Science class welcomed Amanda Hutchison of Spencerian College as a guest speaker in September. 

Paris AOHS Hosts Summer Health Camp

Eight students participated in the 2014 AOHS Health Careers Camp held on July 24 and 25. During the first day's activities, students dissected pig hearts, learned how to take vital signs, suture and give injections to oranges, and discovered their blood type.
