Board of Education Meeting Recap

The Paris Board of Education met virtually on March 16, 2021.  After approving many standard reports and action items, the board viewed showcase and recognitions of the following students:

  1. Paris Elementary students,  Haley Adams, Lincoln Brooks, and Griffin Pasley shared about their project from Garrett Morgan Night along with their teacher Kelley Crain.  
  2. Mrs. Harmon, Paris Middle School principal recognized Malachi Ashford for his great academic work and awesome character during sports, specifically during a game when he allowed a member from another school to shoot a basket.
  3. Zoe Strings from Paris High School was also honored for her hard work on and off the court. Zoe has been awarded the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship from the University of Louisville.

Next, Patrice Thompson shared about the positives and challenges of virtual school this past year. Whitney Wiglesworth shared with the Board survey results from students, staff, parents and community members about what they would like to see at Paris. There was a broad range of ideas and big dreams. Many of these items are already in progress like classroom and cafeteria upgrades and landscaping at all campuses.

Next, the Board approved action items related to the 2020-2021 Salary Schedule that will allow summer pay to be $20.00 per hour for classified staff and $40.00 per hour for certified staff. This pay will be in effect for any work completed outside of contracted days between June 1, 2021 and July 31, 2021.  This  motion also approved an increase for Classified substitutes from $55.00 per day to $75.00 per day.

Sydney Goyette, a teacher from Paris Elementary shared her vision and dream of a Teacher Store Project (run by volunteers and donations)  and the Board voted to support this concept.

The Board voted to continue our partnership with JAG Kentucky for the 2021-22 school year. Next, the Board approved a fundraiser request for the FFA to sell hanging baskets. The Board also approved a request from the Mitchell Family of  moving the Ann Mitchell Scholarship Funds to Paris Elementary for STEM Projects.  

Finally, Superintendent McCauley gave the Board an update on the Paris Education Foundation meeting, Hosting of the 40th District Basketball Tournament this week. He also discussed Graduation being held on the football field on May 29th and Prom will be April 24th. He also touched on upcoming plans for Summer Programing. Superintendent McCauley was thrilled to announce a partnership with the Paris Bourbon County YMCA and the opportunity to provide free childcare for our preschool students. He also shared that we would be paying close attention to House Bill 563 and what effect that would have on our district.
